In July 1992, the IOC voted to allow women's hockey as an Olympic event; it was first held in the 1988 Olympics in Nagano. The Nagano Organizing Committee was not very thrilled to have womens hockey in the Olympics because of the additional costs of having the tournament, but they finally agreed that they would allow six teams to play in the games. They ensured that no additional facilities would be built. The Canadian and American teams have dominated the event, losing only to each other in most cases. The United States won the first tournament in 1998, while Canada won in 2002, 2006, 2010 and 2014.
